Mepal Outdoor Centre

My question to East Cambridgeshire District Council for this Thursday’s full council meeting about Mepal Outdoor Centre:

“Members of this Council will be aware of the fire at Mepal Outdoor Centre on Sunday 12 July. The Centre was handed back to the Council in February 2017, since when it has lain empty and deteriorating, at some considerable cost to secure, and subject to ongoing incidents of trespass. An exercise to sell or let the Centre to an external bidder in 2018 failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion. What are the Council’s plans now for this important but declining asset?”

You mean there has actually been security on site. If that was so you wouldn’t have had so many people visiting the area to fish or wander through the buildings and people have notified the district councillors when vehicles have been parked for hours and people were walking about the place and grounds

Thanks for update. Really upset about the whole business. This l feel should off be sorted years ago. In the past it was used my a lot of people including me and kids. It is a valuable asset to local and the wider community. I see wickstead park has been saved with help from just giving lottery etc so why not here too.

I would like to see this return to an out door activity centre as before. Ely and surrounding areas need this due to the housing growth and population. I for one do not want to see housing on this area. We need to think about families/teenagers and their needs going forward as Ely has limited services/activities for them. I am sure the council could recoup what they put in over time if they took it on.

I’d love to turn the centre into a wedding venue.
